For Schools and Community Organizations
Three In-Person Options for School, Community Programming (and a fourth Virtual option):
Purpose: To bring schools and communities — particularly the adults who raise and educate pre-teen and teens — together to discuss the toughest issues they are facing in a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment to advance their empathy, knowledge, and cooperative ways in which they can support teen mental well-being and thriving.
Book “Fireside” Chat: Jennifer would pair with a leader (YOU?) in a state/school community who would bring their own expertise and local knowledge of the culture, assets and challenges present. Jennifer would bring key questions that are raised in the book along with paradoxes that teenage development brings up for both teens and those who love and educate them. Issues would include risk-taking that causes harm; relationships with technology; forming a healthy identity and sense of purpose; sacred meaning making to counter balance so much profane in the media; social comparison, social anxiety, and relationships, and more.
School Community Leadership Forum: A two-hour program – a small sampling – of a transformative model called “Leadership Lab,” in which teens, parents, and educators collaboratively practice change-maker skills to begin to positively impact their school community. This would include deep empathetic listening and offer practice raising challenges in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The full Leadership Lab model is supported by a research-based framework from the Presencing Institute at M.I.T. Jennifer would co-facilitate with Lab partner Jason Miller, an executive leadership coach and consultant.
Book Talk: This would involve a talk with parents in a school about some of the following themes from the new book, Humanaissance: Igniting Courage in Our Teens and Ourselves. Here are some key themes that could be discussed:
- Learn about key themes of adolescent development that can show up as challenges and shape how we parent and educate.
- Identify which of the six kinds of courage you already use and which ones you need to acquire.
- Assess your family’s unique sources of strength and grow them as assets.
- Harness threat emotions like anger, anxiety, and fear as courage.
- Alter patterns from your upbringing that you want to change in your parenting.
- Translate your deepest family values into everyday actions and bigger life choices.
- Recalibrate your family’s relationship with technology for efficiency, learning, well-being, connection, and innovation.
- Assert boundaries with kindness and confidence to sustain healthy relationships.
- Cultivate your teen’s sense of purpose and meaning in life
Virtual 3-Part Dialogue Series for Parents/Caregivers: Will provide support for parents and caregivers who are deeply engaged in supporting learning and development at home in their family life. From managing social anxieties to performance pressures and taking responsibility to tech use including A.I. to social groups, media, and comparison to driver’s ed, college applications and more, the high school years are filled with change. In every session, parent/caregiver cohorts by grade level will learn about research-based developmental themes and how they are influencing students’ challenges and ways in which they can build essential life skills like self awareness, self management, executive functions (planning, time management), healthy relationship navigation, and responsible decision-making. Parents will offer their specific stories and challenges in a supportive community that will provide ideas and care.
